Question 1025975: Ben drove 147 miles to the beach and the same distance back home. At the BEGINING of the trip, he drove for 1.5 hours at an average speed of 50 miles per hour. Then he stopped for lunch. How far was he from the beach when he stopped for lunch?
After lunch, it took Ben 1.2 hours to get to the beach. What was his average speed, in miles per hour, for that part of the trip?
For the return trip, Ben did not stop. His average speed was 55 miles per hour. How long, to the nearest hundredth of an hour, did the return trip take?

Answer by Theo(13342)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
rate * time = distance.

rate is the average speed in miles per hour.
time is in hours.
distance is in miles.

first formula gets you rate * time = distance becomes 50 * 1.5 = d.
solve for d to get d = 75 miles.

since the total trip is 147 miles, then the remaining distance is 72 miles.

second formula gets you rate * time = distance becomes x * 1.2 = 72.
x represents the rate which is in miles per hour.
solve for x to get x = 72/1.2 = 60 miles per hour.

third formula gets you rate * time = distance becomes 55 * x = 147
x represents the time which is in hours.
solve for x to get x = 147/55 = 2.67 hours rounded to the nearest hundredth of an hour.

the trip going took a total of 1.5 hours and 1.2 hours = 2.7 hours of travel time.

the return trip took 2.67 hours of travel time.

the time going does not include the time taken for the break, which is unknown.
