The Smith family drove to the state park at 60 miles per hour and returned on the same route at 50 miles per hour. Find the distance to the state park if the total driving time was 8.8 hours.

The Smith family drove to the state park at 60 miles per hour and returned on the same route at 50 miles per hour. Find the distance to the state park if the total driving time was 8.8 hours.

Rate = 60 mph ; distance = x miles ; time = d/r = x/60 hrs

From-the-Park DATA:
Rate = 50 mph ; distance = x miles ; time = d/r = x/50 hrs

EQUATION:
time +time = 8.8 hrs
x/60 + x/50 = 8.8
Multiply thru by 10 to get:
x/6 + x/5 = 88
[11x/30] = 88
11x = 30*88
x = 30*8
x = 240 miles (distance to the park)
