Question 1021402: Diego and Ken both leave the mall at the same time, but in opposite directions. If Ken travels 4 mph faster than Diego and after 6 hours they are 180 miles apart, how fast is each traveling?

Answer by fractalier(6550)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Couple of ways to do this...
If they covered 180 miles between them, in 6 hours, then their combined rate was
180 miles / 6 hours = 30 miles per hour
Call Diego's rate, x.
Then Ken's rate is x+4.
Together they add to 30...
x + x+4 = 30
2x + 4 = 30
2x = 26
x = 13 mph
x+4 = 17 mph
