The class ran m feet at z feet per minute and arrived at lunch 3 minutes late. How fast should they have run to have arrived on time?
:
let s = speed required to arrive on time
write a time equation; time = dist/speed
:
slow time - normal time = 3 min
 - = 3
multiply equation by sz, cancel the denominators
ms - mz = 3sz
solve for s
ms - 3sz = mz
Factor out s
s(m - 3z) = mz
s = ; the running speed to arrive on time
