Question 1010233: Two trains leave the depot at the same time, one traveling east and one traveling eest. The speed of one train is 14mph slower than the other. If after 4 hours the distance between the trains is 200 miles, find the speed of each train.
Answer by fractalier(6550) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Rate times time equals distance.
Call the slower train's rate, r.
The faster one is then r+14.
The time is 4 hours and the total distance is 200 miles.
So we write
4r + 4(r+14) = 200
8r + 56 = 200
8r = 144
r = 18 mph
r+14 = 32 mph
