An airplane travels 5184 km. Against the wind in 8 hours and 6224 km with the wind the same amount of time. What is the rate of the plane in still air and what is the rate of the wind?
-------
Upwind DATA:
dist = 5184 km ; time = 8 hrs ; rate = 5184/8 = 648 km/hr
-----------
Downwind DATA:
dist = 6224 km ; time = 8 hrs ; rate = 6224/8 = 778 km/hr
----
Equation:
r - w = 648
r + w = 778
-----
Subtract to get:
2w = 130
Wind rate = 65 km/hr
-------------
Calm rate = 648+65 = 713 km/hr
--------------
