To travel 295 extra miles took 5 hours, so his
(constant) speed was 295 miles/5 hours=59 mph.
The southern trip was:
45 hrs x 59 mph = 2655 miles
.
The northern trip was:
50 hrs x 59 mph = 2950 miles
