Question 1002354: A jet plane traveling at 500 mph overtakes a propeller plane traveling at 200 mph that had a 2-hour head start. How far from the starting point are the planes?
Answer by fractalier(6550) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Call the time the faster plane flies, t hours.
The slower plane, then, has flown t+2 hours, when they meet.
Since their distance are equal, their rates times times are equal (d=rt)...so
500t = 200(t+2)
500t = 200t + 400
300t = 400
t = 4/3 hours
500(4/3) = 2000/3 miles = 666 2/3 miles
