Car A and car B are traveling at different speeds.
Car A can travel 315 miles in the same time it takes car B to travel 180 miles.
If car A travels 30 mph faster than car B, how fast (in mph) is car B traveling?
:
let s = speed of Car B
then
(s+30) = speed of Car A
:
Write a time equation for each car
B time = A time
=
Cross multiply
315s = 180(s+30)
315s = 180s + 5400
315s - 180s = 5400
135s = 5400
s = 5400/135
s = 40 mph is the speed of car B
:
:
Confirm this by finding the actual time of each (Car A's speed is 70)
315/70 = 4.5 hrs
180/40 = 4.5 hrs
