Question 1001277: Hi, I'm having trouble with a word problem. Here it is: Seth climbed a mile high hill at a rate of 6 miles per hour. He descended that hill at a rate of 12 miles per hour. What was his average speed?

Answer by fractalier(6550)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Average speed is total distance divided by total time.
If the hill was one mile distant, then it took him 1/6 hour on the way up, and 1/12 hour on the way down.
Speed = Total distance/Total time
Speed = (2 miles)/(1/6 + 1/12) = 2/(1/4) = 8 miles per hour
and not what you'd expect...
