Let x=total weight of an unpeeled banana
A banana peel weighs (1/8)x
A peeled banana weighs x-(1/8)x
Now we are told that an unpeeled banana (x) balances a peeled banana of the same weight (x-(1/8)x) plus 7/8 of an ounce. So our equation to solve is:
x=x-(1/8)x+7/8 multiply each term by 8
8x=8x-x+7 start collecting like terms
8x=7x+7 subtract 7x from both sides
8x-7x=7x-7x+7 collect like terms
x=7 oz----------------weight of an unpeeled banana
