Question 983289: the sum of two numbers is 417. the bigger number is double the smaller number. what is the smaller number?
Answer by Timnewman(323) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let the bigger number be "x"
let the small number be "y"
now,from your question,
x+y=417---(1)
but the the bigger number "x" is doubled the the smaller number "y"
Therefore,
x=2y---(2)
substitute for x in equation (1)
2y+y=417
3y=417
3y/3=417/3
y=139
The small number "y"is 139
