Question 976423: if you place 1 before a number,the new number is 3 times as large as the original number.what is the original number
Answer by rothauserc(4718) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
we assume we are working in a base 10 number system,
let x be the number, if x is a single digit then
x + 10 = 3x and
x = 5
we proceed with x being a two digit number, then
x + 100 = 3x and x = 50
we can say,
x = 5 or 50 or 500 ......
therefore
x = 10^n / 2 where n is the number of digits in x
