a and b are the numbers
a+b=54
a=54-b
5a+2b=225 Substitute for a
5(54-b)+2b=225
270-5b+2b=225 Subtract 225 from each side.
45-3b=0 Subtract 3b from each side.
45=3b Divide each side by 3
15=b One of the numbers is 15
a=54-b=54-15=39 The other number is 39
ANSWER: The numbers are 15 and 39
CHECK
5a+2b=225
5(39)+2(15)=225
195+30=225
225=225
