Question 949708: The sum of two numbers is 84. if three times the smaller number is subtracted from the larger number the result is 16. find the two numbers
Answer by macston(5194)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
S=smaller number; L=larger number
L+S=84
L=84-S
L-3S=16 Substitute for L.
84-S-3S=16 Subtract 16 from each side.
68-4S=0 Add 4S to each side.
68=4S Divide each side by 4
17=S ANSWER 1: The smaller number is 17
L=84-S=84-17=67 ANSWER 2: The larger number is 67
CHECK
L-3S=16
67-3(17)=16
67-51=16
16=16
