Kendall is Jamal's older brother. The sum of their ages is 39. The difference of their ages is 9. How old are Kendall and Jamal?
K=Kendall's age; J=Jamal's age
K-J=9 Solve this equation for K and substitute in the next equation
K=9+J
K+J=39 Substitute for K.
9+J+J=39 Subtract 9 from each side.
2J=30 Divide each side by 2.
J=15 ANSWER 1: Jamal is 15 years old.
K=9+J=9+15=24 ANSWER 2: Kendall is 24 years old.
CHECK:
Sum is 39
K+J=39
24+15=39
39=39
Difference is 9
K-J=9
24-15=9
9=9
