One number is x; the other number is y
x=2y-14
x+y=160 Substitute for x
2y-14+y=160 Add 14 to each side.
3y=174 Divide each side by 3.
y=58 ANSWER 1: The smaller number is 58.
CHECK:
x=2y-14
x=2(58)-14
x=116-14
x=102 The larger number is 102
x+y=160
102+58=160
160=160
