X+Y=54
X-Y=18 Subtract Y from each side
X=Y+18 Substitute for X in first equation
(Y+18)+Y=54 Subtract 18 from each side
2Y=36 Divide each side by 2
Y=18
If X=Y+18,(equation above)
X=18+18=36
X=36 and Y=18, so:
X*Y=36*18=648 ANSWER: The product of the two numbers is 648.
