Let s = the smaller number
l = the larger number
s + l = 120 the sum of the two numbers equal 120
3*s = 2*l Thrice the smaller is equal twice the large
Take the top equation s + l = 120 and solve for s
s + l = 120
add -l to each side
s = 120 -l
Now substitute ( 120 - l ) for s in 3*s = 2*l
3*( 120 - l ) = 2*l
360 - 3*l = 2*l
add 3*l to each side
360 = 5*l
divide each side by 5
360/5 = l
72 = l
Since s = 120 - l ,
s = 120 - 72
s = 48
Checking our answer,
48 + 72 = 120 which is correct and
3(48) = 2(72)
144 = 144
The smaller number is 48 and the larger is 72.
