x=smaller number
y=larger number
y is the first whole number after x
4x=44+y
y=x+1
4x=44+1+x
3x=45
x=15
y=16

I have tried solving this problem several times and still cannot get the right answer. The problem is: Find two consecutive integers such that 4 times the smaller exceeds the larger by 44?

Let smaller number be S
Then larger number = S + 1
Therefore, 4S = S + 1 + 44
4S = S + 45
4S - S = 45
3S = 45
S, or smaller number = , or
Larger number: 15 + 1, or
