Question 912144: The smaller of two numbers is 12 less than the larger. Four times the larger exceeds 3 times the smaller by 90. Find the numbers.
Answer by JulietG(1812)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
B = A - 12
4A = 3B + 90
Substitute the value of B from the first equation into the second
4A = 3B = 90
4A = 3(A-12) +90
4A = 3A - 36 + 90
4A = 3A + 54
A = 54
If the larger number is 54, then the smaller number is 42.
Check:
Four times the larger (4*54=216) exceeds 3 times the smaller (3*42=126) by 90 (126+90=216)
