Let the two numbers be x and y
:. x + y = 49----eqn(i)
Let's assume x is greater than y by 5
x = 5 + y ----eqn (ii)
Substitute for x in eqn(I)
(5 + y) + y = 49
5 + 2y = 49
2y = 49 - 5
2y = 44
y = 44/2
y = 22
Substitute for y in eqn(ii)
x = 5 + (22)
x = 27
:. The two numbers are 22 and 27
