Question 893121: the sum of two numbers is 105. the smaller number is 5 less than the larger number. find the numbers.
Answer by algebrahouse.com(1659) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
x = larger
x - 5 = smaller {smaller is 5 less than larger}
x + x - 5 = 105 {sum of the two numbers is 105}
2x - 5 = 105 {combined like terms}
2x = 110 {added 5 to each side}
x = 55 {divided each side by 2}
x - 5 = 50 {substituted 55, in for x, into x - 5}
55 and 50 are the two numbers
