Answer by LinnW(1048) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
set J = pints by Jim
S = pints by Sally
J = 3S + 1
S + J = 29
Substitute (3S + 1) for J
S + (3S + 1) = 29
4S + 1 = 29
Add -1 to each side
4S = 28
Divide each side by 4
S = 7
J = 3(7) + 1 = 21 + 1 = 22
