Question 884327: The sum of 2 numbers is 64. One number is 5 less than twice the other. Find the larger number
Answer by DrBeeee(684)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let x = one of the numbers
Let y = the other number
Given:
(1) x + y = 64 and
(2) x = 2y - 5
Put x of (2) into (1) and get
(3) 2y - 5 + y = 64 or
(4) 3y = 64 + 5 or
(5) 3y = 69 or
(6) y = 23
Using (2) we get
(7) x = 2*23 - 5 or
(8) x = 41
Check using (1).
Is (x+y = 64)?
Is (41 + 23 = 64)?
Is (64 = 64)? Yes
Answer: The two numbers are 23 and 41.
