Question 881619: The sum of two numbers is 37. The first number is four more than twice the second. Find the numbers.
Answer by algebrahouse.com(1659) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
x = the second number
2x + 4 = the first number {the first number is 4 more than twice the second}
x + 2x + 4 = 37 {sum of the two numbers is 37}
3x + 4 = 37 {combined like terms}
3x = 33 {subtracted 4 from each side}
x = 11 {divided each side by 3}
2x + 4 = 26 {substituted 11, in for x, into 2x + 4}
26 and 11 are the two numbers
