one number is less than the other by five if five times the smaller number plus twice the larger is 31. then what are the numbers?
-----------
Equations:
x = y-5
5x+2y = 31
-------
Substitute for "x" and solve for "y":
5(y-5) + 2y = 31
7y -25 = 31
7y = 56
y = 8
--------
x = y-5 = 3
-----------------------
