The tens digit is four times the units digit and the number is 10 more than nine times the tens digit. Find the number."
---------------
Comment: Any two digit number can be written as 10t+u where t is the 10's
digit and u is the units digit.
--------------------------
Your Problem:
Let your number be 10t+u
EQUATIONS:
t = 4u
10t+u = 9t+10
--------
Substitute to get:
10(4u)+u = 9(4u)+10
40u+u = 36u+10
5u = 10
u=2
------
Substitute into t=4u to solve for t:
t=4*2=8
--------
The number is 82

" The tens digit is four times the units digit and the number is 10 more than nine times the tens digit. Find the number."
:
Follow these steps, write an equation for what it says (the word "is" usually means "=":
Let x = the 10's digit, Let y = the units digit
The number will = (10x + y)
:
" The tens digit is four times the units digit"
x = 4y
:
" the number is 10 more than nine times the tens digit Find the number."
(10x + y) = 9x + 10
Do the algebra, subtract 9x and y from both sides:
10x - 9x = 10 - y
x = 10 - y
:
Remember x = 4y, substitute that for x in the above equation:
4y = 10 - y
4y + y = 10; added y to both sides
5y = 10
y = 10/5
y = 2 is the units digit
:
10s digit: x = 4y
x = 4(2)
x = 8 is the tens digit
:
That makes the number 82
:
Check solution by seeing if it satisfies the statement:
"the number is 10 more than nine times the tens digit"
82 = 9(8) + 10
