Three boys played a game in which they won points for skill. At the end of the game the winner has six points less than double the middle player's score. The loser has four points less than the middle player's score. The product of the winner's and losers scores is equal to the square of the middle player's score. Find the three scores.
Let middle player’s score be M
Then winner’s score is: 2M – 6
Loser’s score is: M – 4
Therefore,
---- FOILing trinomial on left side
(M - 12)(M - 2) = 0
M, or middle player’s score = OR M = 2 (ignore as this is IMPOSSIBLE)
Winner’s score: 2(12) – 6, or 24 – 6, or
Loser’s score: 12 – 4, or
You can do the check!!
