Question 857277: The sum of two numbers is 18. The sum of 3 times the smaller number and 4 times the larger number is 56. What are the numbers?

Answer by Menjax(62)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
let y be larger number and x smaller number
x+y=18
3x + 4y = 56
sub y=18-x into 3x + 4y = 56
3x + 4(18-x) = 56
3x + 72-4x = 56
-x + 72 = 56
-x = 56 -72 = -16
x=16
16+y=18
y=2
actually x>y so I think the question should have been three times the larger number 4 times the smaller
