Question 856926: The larger number of two is 7 less than 3 times the smaller number. The sum of the two numbers is 37
Answer by JulietG(1812)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let A be the larger number, and B be the smaller.
A = 3B - 7
A + B = 37
substitute the known value of A from the first equation into the second.
(3B-7) + B = 37
Add
4B-7 = 37
Add 7 to each side
4B = 44
Divide each side by 4
B = 11
If B is 11, then A is 37-11 = 26.
.
Let's put the values into the first equation to prove.
26 = (3*11)-7
26 = 33 - 7
26 = 26
Success!
