Question 855357: what is one number is nine less than a second number. four times the first is 14 more than 2 times the second
Answer by JulietG(1812) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
x = y - 9 [one number is nine less than a second number.]
4x = 2y + 14 [four times the first is 14 more than 2 times the second]
Substitute the value of x from the first equation into the second.
4(y - 9) = 2y + 14
Distribute
4y - 36 = 2y + 14
Subtract 2y from each side
2y - 36 = 14
Add 36 to each side
2y = 50
Divide each side by 2
y = 25
.
If y = 25, then x = y-9 or 25-9 or 16
.
Let's see if it's correct by plugging in the values to the second equation.
4(16) = 2(25) + 14
64 = 50 + 14
64 = 64
Success!
