One number is 7 more than twice the other number. If the sum of the two numbers is 16, find the two numbers.
----------------------------
Equations:
2x = y+7
x + y = 16
-------
Substitute for "y" and solve for "x"::
y = 2x-7
-----
x + 2x-7 = 16
3x = 23
x = 7 2/3
-----------------
Solve for "y":
y = 2(23/3)-7 = 46/3 - 7 = (46-21)/3 = 25/3
-------------------------------

Stan H.
