Question 834394: The sum of two numbers is 8. One number is 3 more than 4 times the other. What are the two numbers?
Answer by JulietG(1812)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
A + B = 8
A = 4B + 3
Substitute the value of A into the first equation
(4B+3) + B = 8
Add the Bs
5B + 3 = 8
Subtract 3 from each side
5B = 5
Divide each side by 5
B = 1
.
If B is 1, then A must be 7 (7+1=8)
Let's check - One number is 3 more than 4 times the other.
7 = 3+(4*1)
7 = 3+4
Success!
