Hi, there--

THE PROBLEM:
Find a number which is greater than one-fifth of itself by 12.

A SOLUTION:
Let n be a number.

One-fifth of the number is .

The number is greater than one-fifth of itself by 12, in other words the difference between
the number and one-fifth of the number is greater than 12.

We can write n inequality

Solve the inequality. Subtract from both sides.

Multiply both sides of the inequality by 5/4.

For numbers larger than 15, the number minus one-fifth of that number is more than 15.

Hope this helps! Feel free to email if you have any questions.
