Question 819482: The square of a number, decreased by ten times the number, is equal to -24. What is the number?
We are on the lesson "Completing the Square"
I tried to put together an equation to help me solve it but it did not turn out well, this is what I put together.
Answer by richwmiller(17219) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
x^2 -10x = -24
is fine
x^2 -10x +24 =0
find factors of 24 that add up to -10
-6 and -4
(x-6)*(x-4)=0
x=6 x=4
check
36-60=-24
16-40=-24
ok
but that is not completing the square.
x^2 -10x = -24
x^2 -10x +25= 1
(x-5)^2=1
x-5=+-1
x=6
x=4
