If the smaller of two consecutive even integers is subtracted from 3 times the larger the result is 42.
Two consecutive even integers:
n, n + 2
3(n + 2) - n = 42
3n + 6 - n = 42
Collect like terms:
3n - n = 42 - 6
2n = 36
n = 18
Two consecutive even integers:
18, 20
Hope this helps.
