Assume that the number is x.
Then triple the number is 3*x.
Their sum is x + 3*x = 4*x.
It is given that 4*x = 4 (sum of the number and its triple is 4).
In this equation, if we divide both sides by 4, we get the solution
x = 1.
The number is 1.
Triple the number is 1*3 = 3
Their sum is 1+3 = 4.
The above is a general approach to any such problem.
