Question 774220: The sum of two numbers is 44. One number is 8 less than the other number. Find the numbers.

Answer by pakhi(24)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let the numbers be 'x' and 'y'.
Let 'x' be the larger number.
So x + y = 44 ---------(1)
x - y = 8 ---------(2)
Adding equations 1 and 2 we get
2x = 52
or x = 26
Putting the value of 'x' in equation 1 we get
26 + y = 44
or y = 44 - 26 = 18
Therefore the two numbers are 26 and 18.
check: 26 + 18 = 44
26 - 18 = 8
