Question 764892: 5 is subtracted from 4 times a number and the result is then doubled. if the answer is 6, what is the original number?

The original number = x
(5 - 4x)
Doubled
2(5 - 4x) = 6
10 - 8x = 6
-8x = 6 - 10
-8x = -4
x = -4/-8
x = 1/2
This is the original number.
Proof:
2(5 - 4x) = 6
2(5 - 4(1/2)) = 6
2(5 - 2) = 6
6 = 6
Hope this helps.
