Question 761462: Find two whole numbers whose sum is 60 and whose difference is 12
Answer by DrBeeee(684) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let x = one of the numbers and
Let y = be the other number
We are given
(1) x + y = 60 and
(2) x - y = 12
Now add the two equations (1) and (2) to get
(3) x + y + x - y = 60 + 12 or
(4) 2*x = 72 or
(5) x = 36
Then from (1) we get
(6) 36 + y = 60 or
(7) y = 24
Use (2) to check the values.
Is ( 36 - 24 = 12)?
Is (12 = 12)? Yes
Answer: the two numbers are 36 and 12.
