The problem states
The sum of three times a number and four times another number is negative 25. Twice the first number subtracted by three times the second number is six. What are the two numbers?
let x be the first number and y be the second, then we have
3x + 4y = -25
2x - 3y = 6
solve second equation for x
2x = 3y + 6
x = 3y/2 + 3
substitute for x in the first equation
3(3y/2 + 3) + 4y = -25
9y/2 + 9 + 4y = -25
multiply both sides of = by 2
9y + 18 + 8y = -50
17y = -68
and y = -4 and 3x + 4*-4 = -25 and x = -3
our answer is x = -3 and y = -4
