if 4 is added to a number and the sum is tripled the result is 28 more than the number.

4 is added to the number and the sum is tripled
3 * ( n + 4)

3 * ( n + 4) = n + 28
Solving the equation
3n + 12 = n + 28
3n - n = 28 -12
2n = 16
n =8

Number is 8
