The sum of two numbers x and y, is 61. Their difference is 21. Find the values of x and y ?
x + y = 61
Let the two numbers be:
n and n - 21.
Therefore:
n + n - 21 = 61
Add 21 to each side of the equation.
n + n - 21 + 21 = 61 + 21
2n = 82
n = 41
Therefore:
n - 21 = 41 - 21
n - 21 = 20
The two numbers are:
x = 41 and
y = 20
