Question 718114: if a number is subtracted from the square of its one-half the result is 48.what is the square root of that number.
Answer by checkley79(3341)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
X^2/2-X=48
(X^2-2X)/X=48 CROSS MULTIPLY.
X^2-2X=48X
X^2-2X-48X=0
X^2-60X=0
2(X^2-25)=0
(X-5)(X+5)=0
X-5=0
X=5 ANS.
X+5=0
X=-5 ANS.
SQRT5=2.236 ANS. FOR THE SQUARE ROOT OF THE NUMBER.
SQRT(-5)=2.236i DITTO.
