The sum of two numbers is 80. The larger number is 7 less than 3 times the smaller number. Find the smaller number.

Answer by checkley79(3341)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
X+Y=80
X=3Y-7
(3Y-7)+Y=80
4Y=80+7
4Y=87
Y=87/4
Y=21.75 ANS FOR THE SMALLER NUMBER.
X+21.75=80
X=80-21.75
X=58.75 ANS. FOR THE LARGER NUMBER.
PROOF:
3*21.75-7+21.75=80
65.25+21.75=80
80=80
