Question 694142: The difference between two numbers is 20. Three times the larger number is 102 more than twice the smaller number. a. What is the smaller number? b. What is the larger number?
Answer by mananth(16946) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
b-a=20 b>a
3 b + 2 a = 102
.
1 b -1 a = 20 .............1
3 b + 2 a = 102 .............2
Eliminate y
multiply (1)by 2
Multiply (2) by 1
2 b -2 a = 40
3 b + 2 a = 102
Add the two equations
5 b = 142
/ 5
b = 28
plug value of b in (1)
1 b -1 a = 20
28 -1 a = 20
-1 a = 20 -28
-1 a = -8
a = 8
b= 28
a= 8
