Question 676728:
one number is 8 more than another. if the greater number is added to five times the lesser number, their sum is 44. find the greater number
Answer by checkley79(3341) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
x=y+8
x+5y=44 replace x with (y+8) in the second equation.
(y+8)+5y=44
y+5y+8=44
6y=44-8
6y=42
y=42/6
y=6 the lesser number.
x=6+8
x=14 is the greater number.
Proof:
14+5*6=44
14+30=44
44=44
