Answer by ptaylor(2198) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
First, lets find the distance between 2 and 5/12 and 7 and 1/3
2 and 5/12 =29/12
7 and 1/3=88/12
Distance between them is 88/12-29/12 which = 59/12
Now, 5/6 of 59/12 =
(5/6)(59/12)=295/72
Also, 1/6 of 59/12=(1/6)(59/12)=59/72
So, 5/6 of the distance between them is 295/72 units
And, 2 and 5/12 +295/72 is the number we are looking for
(2 and 5/12=29/12=6(29)/72)=174/72
174/72+295/72=469/72 =6 and 37/72 units----the number we are looking for
Now, let's work it going in the other direction:
7 and 1/3 minus 1/6 of 59/12---should give us the same answer
7 and 1/3 minus 59/72=
528/72-59/72=469/72=6 and 37/72 units------------the number we are looking for
Hope this helps----ptaylor
