At the market I bought plums, peaches, and pears. I bought twice as many peaches as pears and 4 1/2 times as many plums as pears. In all, I bought 45 pieces of fruit. How many of each did I buy?

Let p be pears. Let x be peaches and y be plums.
You are told

and

You bought 6 pears.
Now solve for peaches. peaches = y = 2p = 2*6 = 12
Plums = x = 4.5p = 4.5*6 = 27
